Casualty and Theft Losses. There's a host of losses that can be deducted. Use Form 4684 to calculate losses.

Job Expenses and Certain Miscellaneous Deductions. If the taxpayer had out of pocket expenses related to their job, the amount over 2% of adjusted gross income can be used. Other expense like tax preparation fees can be listed in this section.

A sole proprietorship, also known as a sole trader or simply a proprietorship, is a type of business entity is owned and run by one individual and in which there is no legal distinction between the owner and the business. The owner receives all profits (subject to taxation specific to the business) and has unlimited responsibility for all losses and debts.

The same applies to an "Independent Contractors" that work for themselves and receive a 1099 form. They will need to file a Schedule C.

Schedule C - Profit and Loss from Business

Schedule C is the first step for figuring taxable income from a home-based business. Discover what can be deducted from revenue to determine taxable income the schedule is made up of four parts.

Part I - Income
 Part II - Expenses
Part III - Cost of Goods Sold
Part IV - Information on Your Vehicle
Part V - Other Expenses

The income section (Part I) is where gross revenue generated from the business is listed. If the business sells a product, the total from Part III, cost of goods sold is subtracted from gross revenue to determine gross profit. Other related income, as well as returns, must be included in this section.
